You’re new in the Netherlands. Maybe you came for love, maybe for work. In the first case, you speak the language of love, which may be understood at home but won’t buy you your bus ticket or een pondje jonge kaas. 

 

If you came for work you may find that your colleagues all speak English and are eager to show it. And not just your colleagues. Apart from a few kaaskoppen, most Dutch people are always ready to help you out – in English.

“So, why bother learning Dutch?”,  I can hear you ask. Well, I think you know the feeling of being left out at the lunch table, because everyone is speaking Dutch. And you want to blend in. You know that knowing a little Dutch may help you feel at home. And while you  may not stay for ever, you know it’s worth the effort.
